One way is using insecticides or pesticides. Homeowners choose among the three groups of insecticides available in the market to use for bug extermination. They may choose contact insecticides that are applied on the infested area. Contact insecticides are repellent in nature. This attribute plays a role in its effectiveness. Insects are repelled off the region where this has been utilized. However it also has a drawback. The bed bugs may not come back to the sprayed area, but they will look for other areas to nest in. Contact insecticides don't really solve the problem. They only supply a brief solution.

A different type of pesticide is insecticidal dusts. These insecticidal dusts are made from pulverized glass and silica powder. When applied, they destroy the waxy outermost coats of bed bugs, which serve as their skin and protection. Once they have been destroyed, the dust poisons the bed bugs and dries out their entire system. While this kind of pesticide works by killing the bed bugs, they may not quickly take effect.

The third variety is insect growth regulators (IGR). They target bed bugs at their early growth stage, as nymphs and eggs.
